About Fontainebleau & Vaux
Guide reviewed
A Fontainebleau and Vaux-le-Vicomte day trip from Paris can combine two château visits, or give one estate most of the day. The proposed 8–10 hours includes transport in both directions and remains an estimate. Choose the properties and visit format before fixing the date.
One estate or a pairing?
| Your preference | Route to consider | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Palace interiors and time to explore | A day centred on Fontainebleau | The second château |
| Formal gardens and one coherent estate visit | A day centred on Vaux-le-Vicomte | A complete Fontainebleau visit |
| Comparing two château settings | Fontainebleau and Vaux with a lunch interval | Some time in each estate’s wider grounds |
| A château and a village walk | One estate, with Barbizon considered as an alternative | The second substantial château visit |
The options are suggestions to review, not stops automatically included together. Start with the experience you most want and keep the second visit optional if it would compress lunch or the first estate.
The opening calendar comes first
Fontainebleau’s usual Tuesday closure matters when pairing the estates; Paris’s official tourism information lists its opening conditions. The château’s official ticket office provides the conditions of the ticket you purchase. Do not assume the displayed start time has the same meaning as a timed appointment at another monument.
Vaux-le-Vicomte is at Maincy. Its official visitor page separates regular visits from seasonal events. Candlelit evenings need their own calendar, ticket and return planning; they are not a year-round addition to a standard daytime excursion.
Check both properties for your date before buying tickets. The programme must allow time to leave one estate, meet the vehicle, have lunch and reach the next entrance. If those transitions would consume your visiting time, keep one château.
Walking and guided visits
Interior visits and garden walks have different demands. Share any difficulty with steps, long distances or standing and confirm access to the specific areas you want. A chauffeur connects the estates; it does not imply an accompanied indoor visit or access to every room.
If a specialist guide is important, request the language, duration and meeting place separately. Our driver-versus-guide comparison helps distinguish the road journey from the interpretation. Tickets, meals and any event admission are separate unless expressly confirmed.
Request your preferred format
Tell us your date, Paris pick-up, passengers, first-choice estate and whether you prefer a second château or more time in the gardens. Include purchased tickets, walking needs and your desired return time.
Request a quote for your Fontainebleau and Vaux-le-Vicomte day trip. Sending the request does not confirm the transport or visits and requires no payment. For another château option, compare Versailles or use the day-trip choice guide.
A day to make your own
An itinerary to inspire your trip. Stops and timings depend on your date, reservations and preferred pace.
- 01
Fontainebleau
Begin with the palace if the opening calendar and your ticket arrangements allow.
- 02
A lunch interval
Keep a genuine break between visits rather than planning two uninterrupted château circuits.
- 03
Vaux-le-Vicomte
Explore the château and gardens at Maincy, or choose a longer visit to one estate instead.
Before you go
- Allow 8–10 hrs as a planning estimate, including travel from Paris.
- Private transport and a local guide are separate services.
- Check opening dates and reserve admission or tastings in advance.
Can both châteaux fit into a day?
They can form a proposed 8–10 hour outing if both are open and the visit times align. The duration is an estimate including travel, not a guarantee.
Are candlelit evenings always available?
No. Vaux-le-Vicomte’s candlelit visits follow a specific seasonal events calendar and require their own planning and admission arrangements.
What if we prefer one château?
A day focused on one estate leaves more time for its interiors and grounds. Barbizon can be considered as an alternative stop, subject to the final timing.
